A battle rages every Tuesday through Friday morning here in Chaosville...the battle to beat the school bus. My boys are one side of the battle; the school bus and I are on the other. I understand their point of view, I really do. I did not like riding the bus when I was in school either. The bus comes at 7 and they don't get to school until around 7:40 in the mornings. In the afternoons, Clay gets on at 2:50, Raley gets on about 3:15 and they get home just after 4. Everyone rides the same bus here from pre-k up to high school. That's the main reason Raley didn't ride the bus until he was in 2nd grade. We figured he had heard most of the bad words the teenagers might use and he is a good enough kid that he knows not to use a word without knowing for sure what it means and he has our assurance that if he asks us what a word means, he will not get in trouble if it's a bad word. I had also just given birth to Pattie and was NOT going to schlep her around to pick up lines and so forth when she should be eating/napping/getting clean pants. And since big brother is there to help him out, Clay has ridden the bus this year as well.
So our mornings sound a lot like this:
ME-"Hurry up and finish your milk so you can eat breakfast"
"I don't hear any crunching in there! Are you eating?"
"Stop playing with the dogs and eat your food!"
"Have you brushed your teeth yet? Use the timer!!"
"Socks and shoes on please."
"The bus will be here any minute and I am NOT going to take you to school just because you took forever to tie your shoes! You can just get on the bus with your shoes in your hands!"
"Come get your lunchboxes RIGHT NOW!!!!!"
Most of this is said quite loudly if Pattie is awake and in that harsh mommy whisper if she isn't. Also if she isn't there's some of this:
"Your sister is asleep! Just sit there and drink your milk/eat your food!"
So far I am winning since we have never actually missed the bus due to the boys, but we have come close a couple times. The only times we have missed it is when we woke up too late to even bother trying. Battling with my children is not the best way to start the morning since I usually haven't even had any coffee yet!

I can't imagine trying to get two on the bus. Of the four of us who schlep to the bus stop in the morning, only Sydney has to be ready for her day. I can always go back to make myself presentable and the boys often go in their pj's. I am going to be in so much trouble in a couple of years when Liam goes!
