Phase II
So the UPS guy stopped by on Tuesday afternoon last week and brought us a box full of Phase III supplies. Here's a peek:
Any guesses? GRAPES!! Well, there's a couple pear trees in there too but the rest of it is 6 different varieties of grapes. You see, we already had a grape on our mailbox post ever since we moved in. In fact, we brought it with us from the house we lived in before that. When we started planning the fence, we thought it would be neat to put a grapevine in between each post that would grow along the top rails and be pretty and green and different.
Technically our existing grape is a female Bronze Scuppernong vine. Did you know that grapes have male and female sexes? You do now! So we drew up a plan and picked a different varietal for each section. Here's a picture of our highly sophisticated blueprint (it got a little wet before I snapped the pic):
So we ordered a bunch of grapes from Willis Orchard along with a couple pear trees to plant in the front yard. Then Jayme dug some holes in between each set of posts.
Then we had to gently separate the grapevines from each other and plant them in the holes.
Then we made sure it was standing up straight so that it would grow up on top of the rails like we envisioned.
Then we filled in the holes and added a secret weapon: tree tubes! These will protect the little guys and act as a mini greenhouse for them for the next little while. As soon as they leaf out and reach the posts and start wrapping around the rails, we will remove the tubes.
The varietals we have planted are (from left to right):
Blanc DuBois wine grape
Black Spanish wine grape
Red Southern Dixie Muscadine (male) not planted yet due to ants in the hole we dug
Red Scarlet Muscadine (female)
Black Nesbit Muscadine (male)
Black Loomis Muscadine (female)
Bronze Dixie Sweet Scuppernong (male)
Bronze Scuppernong (female) pre-existing
Beware the Dino Guards!!
