The spot where we have the garden has mostly clay soil, so we bought a few bags of organic humus and plowed them in with the existing dirt.
We planned out where the plants/seeds would go and made rows or mounds for each while the plants looked on.
Then it was time to put them in the ground and water them. We planted tomatoes (cherry and grape), peppers (banana and jalapeno), cucumbers, sugar snap peas, watermelons, cantalopes, sweet yellow onions, summer squash, and an unknown type of bean plant that Clay brought home from school. In seed form, we planted carrots, corn and "New Zealand" spinach (which isn't really spinach but looks and tastes like spinach and is made for hot climates).
Since the garden is in our front yard, and we already had an incident with the boys running through it while they were playing, we decided to put a low fence around it. Hopefully this will keep out any curious skunks or other critters that happen along. We can hardly wait to see what survives grows, and we are very excited that we will someday eat our very own vegetables!
Somehow, we also managed to replace the wire portion of the chicken-yard fence with some lattice material. Our hope is that this will prevent the chickens from getting out into the main portion of the yard when we don't want them to. We usually let them out in the afternoons, but we would like for it to be our idea. Also, we don't want them to get hurt trying to go under the fence.

We had such a productive weekend, but I am not nearly rested enough for all I have to do this week! Oh, well, just another day in paradise Chaosville :)

I am so impressed with the enormous garden and your little chicken coop! It's like my husband's dream. Fresh eggs and veggies every day.
ReplyDeleteI'm so jealous of your garden! I wish we had enough room for one.....
