Movie Confessional

A couple weeks ago over at Tales From the Dad Side, SciFiDad was talking about movies. I liked the idea of that post so I have stolen it...but I told him I was going to, so that makes it okay, right? My post is a little different since he only had three categories of movies and I have added a fourth. Does that save me from plagiarism?

MOVIES I SHOULD LIKE BUT DON'T:
The simple answer to this is...chick flicks. I don't really like romantic comedies, or love stories in general. Of course there are a few exceptions, but I don't like this genre so I typically don't even watch them. Thus I have never seen The Notebook, or The Bridges of Madison County and will more than likely never see Dear John.
I am much more into action movies and movies based on some of my favorite books. Sometimes, though I truly dislike the film adaptation of a book I enjoyed. For example, The Sum of All Fears by Tom Clancy. I was perfectly happy with the Harrison Ford version of Jack Ryan and when they cast Ben Affleck it made me cringe. Another one would be Hannibal by Thomas Harris. A perfectly creepy book with an unfortunate casting change in the movie that made me not even try it out.

MOVIES I SHOULDN'T LIKE BUT DO:
Some of my very favorite movies were box office flops of monumental nature. Anything from the 80s and 90s starring Sylvester Stallone, Arnold Swarzeneggar, or Steven Seagal. I genuinely like the new Stars Wars Trilogy and can make myself ignore Jar Jar quite effectively.
I guess in general I shouldn't love action and comic based movies as much as I do, but I was raised with them and since I had boys first, it was the natural course of things. So far, Pattie seems to prefer the Hulk and Wolverine to most princess films as evidenced by this stunning ensemble:

MOVIES I LOVE WITHOUT SHAME:
Twilight, Lord of the Rings, Star Wars, Harry Potter, James Bond, and almost anything superhero based

MOVIES I HAVE TO WATCH ANY TIME I SEE THEM ON TV:
This category includes mostly movies I do not have on DVD so I get this overwhelming compulsion to turn to them if I see they are playing on tv. These movies include The Count of Monte Cristo which is on as I type this, A Knight's Tale, and to a lesser extent Legally Blonde (truthfully it's Jayme who likes this movie so much).
I also tend to tune to my favorite movies when they are on even if I do have them on DVD. Often, unless it is showing on a commercial free channel, I get frustrated by the tv editing or the commercial interruptions and get the DVD out instead. This is especially true for rated R movies. I get very irritated by the overdubbing of curse words!

So that's my list, what movies are on yours?

  1. I saw The Notebook in a theatre with my girlfriend (who would become MTM) and 10 other women. I was the lone penis in the room.

And I have to agree with you on A Knight's Tale... it's so cheesy I can't not watch it, especially the way they turn Nirvana into a middle ages dance.

  3. Well even though I am living in a house of all boys, I am still a fan of chick flicks. I just finished reading Dear John and can't wait to see it! Of course I'll have to take mom because Justin cringes at the thought of going to the movies! I always love a good gruesome horror (does that make me strange?) and I am always up for a follow the clue suspense! Go ahead and gasp ... not a big fan of comic superhero films!
