There have been so many people on Facebook lately posting their feelings about saying "Happy Holidays" instead of "Merry Christmas" and it lead me to ask myself if I had any feelings about it one way or the other. I think my answer is...not really, no!
Maybe it's because we have a very good friend who is Muslim, or maybe it's because we aren't super religious people, but saying "Happy Holidays" to me is just fine. I was explaining to Raley last night that the reason some people say Happy Holidays is that there are many holidays this time of year. There's Christmas (which we celebrate) and New Year's. There's also Hanukkah/Chanukah and Kwanzaa. This year in December there are also the Islamic New Year and Ashura holidays if you are Muslim. Winter Solitice celebrations abound for many religious groups, and what about the agnostics and atheists and people who mix different religions together or even create their own?
Gone are the days where you can tell by looking at someone what religion they follow, and the risk of insulting someone does exist, particularly for shopkeepers and restaurant personnel. When I am greeted with a "Happy Holidays" I respond the same way and if someone takes the chance to wish me a "Merry Christmas" I tell them the same thing. I think that the intent behind the holiday greeting is what matters...kind of along the lines of "it's the thought that counts" and I refuse to get my nose out of joint about something that is intended as a good thing.
If I wished someone a "Happy Holiday" and they got insulted and started railing at me about CHRISTmas I just might be tempted to launch into the story of the origins of Christmas as a pagan holiday morphed into a Christian one and the growing belief that Jesus wasn't born in December at all much less on the 25th.
So go ahead and greet me in any way you wish, and I will respond in kind. I believe that this time of year is magical to many and the goodwill feeling it brings is manifested in many wonderful ways, none of which offends me in the least, and I mean no offense to you when I wish you an very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

Oh my gosh, I totally agree, and am SO tired of Christians getting all pissy because people won't wish them a Merry Christmas! And I AM a Christian, but I understand the reasoning behind saying Happy Holidays instead, if you don't know for a fact that the person in question celebrates the Christian holiday.
ReplyDeleteAnd yeah, arguing about a holiday greeting is hardly in the spirit of CHRISTmas anyways, so get over it, people!
I completely agree with you, too. I think a lot of people forget that our country was founded on JUDEO-Christian principles, not just Christian ones and while most of the Jewish people I know aren't offended by "Merry Christmas", what's so wrong with saying "Happy Holidays" so that they (and other religious/ethnic groups) feel included, too? As if there aren't bigger problems in the world, like starving children or human trafficking. Jeez. I'll get off my soapbox now.....
ReplyDeleteMERRY CHRISTMAS!!!! I Love Jesus and don't need a lecture about the origins of CHRISTmas.
