About a month ago, Pattie started having these horrible night-time coughing fits. They lasted for over an hour each and she had at least two a night so we weren't sleeping too great. After a few days, Jayme took her in to the doctor and he said it was a virus that would have to "run its course" which, loosely translated, means "We have no idea why she's coughing and there's no medicine to make her stop, sorry."
Of course within a few days I was coughing too. This is something I do every year when it starts to get cooler and it takes me weeks to get over it. I was very upset to think that I had passed it down to my sweet little girl. Since Pattie had pneumonia at the beginning of the year, we are a little overly paranoid about coughing and wheezing. She never ran any fever though so we were hoping it would pass soon. Well, no sooner than I had sent an e-mail to her doctor asking if we should check her out again since the cough was still around, she spiked a 102.2! We called and got her an appointment for the next morning (it was about 6 pm). She ran fever through the night but it broke on its own with no meds. She coughed so hard she threw up twice. (At first I was worried this was another aspect of the sickness, but luckily not)
I was already scheduled to sub the next morning and I could not sleep worrying about her and going back and forth on whether I would call in the morning and cancel my sub day. I made deals with myself about it and decided that if she threw up again I would not go. She didn't so I went. Can I just mention here how hard it is for me to leave her when she is sick? Or how hard it is for me to miss taking her to the doctor? It has nothing to do with not trusting Jayme to do it, it's about me feeling like I am not doing my "job". Anyhoo...
Her lungs did not sound good at all and given her history, they sent her for a chest x-ray but there was no pneumonia. They also checked her iron levels and she was excellent there, so that was a relief. Jayme brought her home with a prescription for 5 days of Zithromax and breathing treatments every 4 hours and a follow-up the next day.
I didn't get a sub call so I took her in the next afternoon. She was much improved but her pediatrician (who I LOVE!!) wanted to add Prednisolone into the mix. Her airways were constricted and swollen. The breathing treatments help the constriction and the steroid would help with the swelling. That way her coughs can actually do what they are trying to do and get some of the gunk out of her lungs. Three days later we are doing a lot better. She is still coughing but not in big hour long fits.
We may find at the end of all this that she has asthma. It runs in my family. We'll cross that bridge when we come to it. For now I would settle for anything that helps her (and me) get some sleep.

I feel for you. Liam has had those coughing fits for about a year and a half now. He's now on Singulair (chewable tab) and takes liquid Claritin everyday. We have an inhaler for him in case he gets wheezy (so scary!), but we haven't had to use it for over six months now. Hope they figure it out soon - that's no fun for anyone. :(
ReplyDeleteI hate leaving the house when I know my kids are sick too; it feels against nature.
