After a blissfully healthy two week run, sickness has returned to Chaosville. "Who is sick," you ask? "Is it you, who seems to have (almost miraculously) avoided the myriad of sickness in the house since early December?" No! Of course not! It's Pattie, the one of us who was the most sick! Guess what she has? An ear infection... in the same ear that started the whole thing off! This doesn't seem possible to me because:
December 16-26 she was on a twice daily dose of Amoxicillin
December 28 she received a shot of Rocephin
December 29-31 she was on Zithromax
January 2-4 she was on IV Rocephin while in the hospital
January 5-15 she was on a twice daily dose of Augmentin
All of these antibiotics were taken for their full course and a dose was never skipped (although one dose of Augmentin was a few hours late). How in the name of all that is holy can she STILL have an ear infection??
I took her to the doctor yesterday and they gave her another shot of Rocephin and today she will start 10 more days of Augmentin. They also took a follow-up chest x-ray yesterday which was clear of pneumonia (thank GOD for small favors) but that hasn't stopped me from imagining that her breathing is too shallow or hearing a wheeze here or a rasp there.
I never used to get this scared when the kids were sick. I used to trust that the medicine I was wrestling down their throats would fix them up and we would be off to the races. Seeing her in a hospital bed has ended those feelings and replaced them with visions of her in that bed with that IV in her arm and the oxygen on her nose. My stomach is a pit of roiling acid, I have no appetite, no energy, no desire to do any of the milliion things that need to be done in the house.
I feel like I am waiting for the other shoe to drop still. Like I'll hear a voice that says, "HA HA HA! You thought she was well! What a moron you are!!" Of course this could just be the sleep deprivation I hear.
Did I mention that Clay has an ear infection as well? Yep! He missed school yesterday and will today as well. I wonder if it's just a coincidence that the last time there was this much sickness in our family was the December-January when Raley started Kindergarten?

You guys have had a rough month! Has the doctor mentioned tubes for Miss P.? I hope this newest round of antibiotics works for her sake. And yours. :)
